Monthly Archives: March 2014

If you’ve been following along, you’ve seen a bunch of shots underwater.  And a shot or two topside (more of those to come).  Even one shooting from under water through Snell’s Window to see what’s up there.  But here’s a different kind.  This is a “split.”  Split in the sense that you have the camera half submerged.  The bottom of the lens is underwater.  The top is out of the water.  And to do this well, you’d really like a big dome port for your lens.  And ideally a really calm day so that you get a nice tight line between the underwater and the out of the water.

Well, this wan’t so ideal.  I had a tiny little mini-dome.  And while it wasn’t exactly the Banzai Pipeline back there, it wasn’t like glass either.  Oh, and it was my first time trying this.  So, a long way of saying, “challenging.”  But happy with the result anyway.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia, January 2014

Ablaze. Reds, oranges, yellows, pinks. That is, when it is lit.

Before you put light on it, it’s drab, olive-ish. I would have passed it by if Alex hadn’t told me what to look for at the dive briefing. (Thanks Alex.)

Really. Everywhere. Beautiful color on the reef. Fish all over the reef. Not the best photo ever (sorry). But gives you an idea of the experience down there.

I’m ready to go back now.

Whip it good. Suggested musical accompaniment for today.

The corals and fans were in great shape and were big.  But not as big as the tiny diver here would suggest.  He was a little far away.

Same dive as yesterday’s picture.  Totally different colors.  I love the intense purple coral at the bottom.  Maybe less Lilly Pulitzer, more Alexander Julian.

If you’ve been following along, you know that despite really good advice, I like  photographing the green coral.  Here, it was interspersed with some pink coral.  And as we were in the tropics, it naturally made me think of Lilly Pulitzer.

I was really loving the 8mm fisheye lens.  Since I’d been pretty much all macro, all the time before, this was a brave new world.

Here, I’m very close to the surface shooting through Snell’s Window so that you can see both the underwater and the things out of the water.  In this shot,  you see a school of fish and the trees on the island.  The school of little fish  look like they’re flying through the sky.  All this before breakfast.  Nice way to start the day.

Yes, I know it’s March Madness time, but this isn’t about that kind of over under.

Here’s what it looks like between dives, over the water.  (Don’t worry — we’ll be back to under tomorrow.)

The Indo Siren is a great boat with a terrific crew. And here’s a shot looking at the dive deck. Convenient and efficient.

Fish and coral. Fish and Coral. Everywhere fish and coral. And as Martha Stewart likes to say, “that’s a good thing.”
